On 2 October 1958, Guinea gained independence. Sékou Touré, then very popular in his country as in all African countries, became president; he advocated pan-Africanism, the “complete decolonization of all the structures of the country and the establishment of a socialist society. In fact, the regime turned into a dictatorship. After a long period of political instability, elections were announced for 2010 to allow civilians to take over the country. At the end of these elections, Alpha Condé became president of the republic. He promised a new era and announced his intention to become "the Mandela of Guinea" by unifying his country, fighting corruption and restoring the economy, which hardly benefits from the real mineral wealth of the territory. Since October 2019, the FNDC Movement (Front National pour la Défense de la Constitution), a political alliance between civil society groups and opposition politial parties, initiates demonstrations to protest against the amendment or adoption of a new constitution that would allow President Alpha Condé to run for a third presidential term.
